Non-toxic living can be very challenging in this world full of toxins. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to eliminate every single toxin from your life. However, I’ve learned over the course of my own journey that it’s not about perfection; instead, it’s more about reducing your overall toxin load and making simple swaps when you have a choice and choosing better products when you run out of something. If you’re ready to hop on the path to low-tox living, your kitchen is a great place to start. Stick around while I tell you more about the best & easiest low-tox kitchen swaps!

Plastic Cups —> Glass or Stainless Steel

You probably use cups every single day, so it’s important to be conscious about what material yours are made out of. Plastic cups may seem like the best choice, but plastic can leach into many liquids. As a result, you are ingesting that plastic, which can be harmful to your health and hormones.

Replacing your plastic cups with glass or stainless steel is a great first step toward low-tox living, and it doesn’t require a huge commitment. All you really need is a set of 4-8 glasses and a stainless steel travel tumbler to get started!

Pro Tip: The more plastic you eliminate from your kitchen, the better. Swapping plastic for glass, stainless steel, or wood also applies to plates, bowls, cooking utensils, food storage containers, etc!

Non-Stick Pans —> Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, or Ceramic Coated

I understand that replacing your pans is a bit of a larger financial commitment, but it’s something that’s important to note. Non-stick/teflon pans typically contain “forever chemicals,” which are toxins that tend to build up in the body and are very hard to detox. If at all possible, consider replacing your pans with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic coated (be sure it doesn’t contain PFOAS, etc.) options.

Even if you simply purchase one skillet for now, you’ll still reduce your toxin exposure, which is the ultimate goal. I just got a new stainless steel skillet and I love it! While swapping out your pans may require you to learn how to cook differently, protecting your health is well worth it.

Plastic Cutting Boards —> Glass or Wood

One of the swaps that I’m most passionate about is your cutting boards. Plastic cutting boards are a popular choice, but they also contribute to contaminating your food with microplastics because they break down when you use a knife on them.

Therefore, please consider swapping yours out for a glass or wood option. Most would say that wooden cutting boards are the best choice because glass options may dull your knifes faster; however, glass is my personal favorite. If you don’t want to mess with special cleaning and conditioning protocols to maintain your wooden cutting boards, then glass is a great option.

Aluminum Cooking Sheets —> Stainless Steel

Cooking sheets and muffin pans are frequently made out of aluminum because it’s a cheaper metal that typically performs well. With that said, aluminum isn’t friendly for your health.

It’s very easy to swap them for stainless steel. In fact, this is a relatively cheap low-tox swap to consider, as you can get a set of different sized stainless steel cooking sheets for less than $30.

I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to start eliminating toxins from your home, but I also know just how beneficial it can be for your health. In combination with other lifestyle changes, living low-tox has helped me get to where I am today, which is on the brink of healing chronic illness completely naturally.

Living with illness isn’t the only option. Healing is possible, and I’m living proof—but it does require you to start somewhere!
