Helpful Organizational Tips to Decrease Your Clutter

Cleaning and organizing are some of the most dreadful things for many people, but they’re so necessary when it comes to keeping a peaceful, welcoming, and comfortable home. Even though it might be the last thing on your priority list, organizing can be incredibly satisfying. Personally, I usually dread the idea of carrying out this task; however, I really enjoy organizing once I get going. Stick around if you need a few of my helpful organizational tips to decrease your clutter.

Ditch Anything You Don’t Need

This might be easier said than done, but you should consider ditching anything you don’t need or use. We all tend to hold onto more than we need, which can lead to clutter and chaos. I’ve been organizing my home little by little this year—getting rid of stuff I no longer need or use has brought me an abundance of peace and relief. If it’s just taking up space, ditch it!

Pro Tip

You might not want to get rid of stuff because you don’t know what to do with it. Consider giving it away to someone who needs it or donating it to a charitable cause. There’s nothing wrong with selling, but if you don’t need it, then there’s no loss to you—bless someone else with it.

Start in One Room or Area

Getting started on this project is one of the most daunting things about it. That said, you gotta start somewhere! Start with one room or area in need of the most organization. If you’re anything like me, one task will lead you to another completely unrelated one, but hey, at least we’re still moving.

Even if you tend to become scatterbrained when cleaning or organizing, the key to success is coming back to complete each task that you started in the process. If you asked my husband about my cleaning habits, he’d tell you that I’m insane—but he’d also admit I always get the job done (eventually!).

Consolidate as Much as Possible

Consolidating is one of the most important factors when learning to organize effectively. We live in a relatively small house without much storage space, but I’ve made it all work so far because I’ve mastered the art of consolidation. Basically, make sure everything has a home and remember that baskets are your friend.

For instance, your pets and children probably have toys; put them in a basket they can reach. You might have multiple perfume bottles; put them in a basket in your bathroom or bedroom. Additionally, you may have various soy wax candles—store them together in a basket in your cabinet rather than displaying them all at once.

If You Use It, Put It Away

Organizing is great and all, but it doesn’t work if you don’t. Suppose you get your hair tools out to do your hair one day, but don’t put them back in their designated home. You also get all your makeup out but don’t put it away. Before you know it, your bathroom is a disaster again.

This applies to any room in your house—if you use it, put it away when you’re finished. Once you organize your entire house once, you can maintain it easily by doing this one simple step.

Now that you know a few of my best organizational tips to decrease your clutter, you can start your project on the right foot. Organizing might not be your idea of a good time, but you will feel accomplished and satisfied when it’s all done—start small if you have to!
